ZOLL TECHNOLOGY SUPPORTS NEW AHA RECOMMENDATIONS FOR IMPROVING CPR QUALITY

July 18, 2013—CHELMSFORD, MASS.—ZOLL Medical Corporation, a manufacturer of medical devices and related software solutions, announced today that the company’s CPR technologies and data products can help organizations meet the just-released American Heart Association (AHA) consensus statement recommending an increased focus on improving CPR quality during resuscitation from sudden cardiac arrest (SCA). These recommendations include metrics of CPR performance; monitoring, feedback, and integration of the patient’s response to CPR; team-level logistics to ensure performance of high-quality CPR; and continuous quality improvement on provider, team, and systems levels.

The paper identifies the critical components in high-quality CPR as minimizing interruptions in chest compressions, providing compressions of adequate depth and rate, achieving full recoil, and avoiding excessive ventilation.

ZOLL defibrillators, from AEDs to ALS, feature Real CPR Help®. The company’s latest release of Real CPR Help can provide audio and visual feedback that guides rescuers to the correct depth and rate of chest compressions, can track idle time, and help ensure full chest recoil. CPR performance data is recorded and can be downloaded for post-resuscitation debriefing. Improving CPR quality has been an ongoing commitment of ZOLL’s since 2002, when it was the first to introduce real-time CPR feedback in its AED Plus®.

ZOLL’s commitment to high-quality CPR is also evident in the company’s suite of tools for optimal resuscitation response, which include See-Thru CPR® and mainstream EtCO2 monitoring. See-Thru CPR is ZOLL’s proprietary technology, which minimizes the duration of pauses in CPR to enable rescuers to see the underlying rhythm, is available on the ZOLL E Series®, the R Series®, the new X Series®, and the AED Pro®.

“The AHA consensus statement on the importance of high-quality CPR is a step in the right direction for improving outcomes. For the last 10 years, ZOLL has been emphasizing that CPR feedback can help improve CPR quality,” said Jonathan A. Rennert, President of ZOLL.

Rennert also noted that, among other CPR feedback technologies, only ZOLL’s Real CPR Help has been shown to impact survival-to-discharge, as demonstrated in research published in Annals of Emergency Medicine1.

About Sudden Cardiac Arrest

SCA is an abrupt disruption of the heart’s function, which causes a lack of blood flow to vital organs. It occurs an estimated 380,000 times each year in the United States and claims more than one million lives globally each year. SCA is a leading cause of unexpected death in the world and often strikes without warning. Survival varies widely among communities, yet overall averages around 8% in the U.S.
