BRITISH HEART FOUNDATION AWARDS ZOLL A TENDER FOR AEDS FOR ANOTHER THREE-YEAR TERM

17 July, 2013—CHELMSFORD, MASS.—ZOLL Medical Corporation, a manufacturer of medical devices and related software solutions, announced today that it has been selected as a nominated supplier by the British Heart Foundation (BHF) for the ZOLL AED Plus® through 2016.

ZOLL has been working in partnership with the BHF since 2010 to supply the AED Plus through their part-funding program, which recommends the device to communities and organizations requesting funding for AEDs and offers it at a discounted rate. ZOLL has supplied numerous AEDs to public places and areas of need throughout the United Kingdom in conjunction with its existing partnership with the BHF.

The tender process involves leading professionals from both the medical community and ambulance service who scrutinize all aspects vital to the delivery of BHF’s community resuscitation work. The clinical aspects of the devices, account management, compliance with resuscitation guidelines, and compatibility with the ambulance services are all taken into account.

Sarah Forsey
, Grants and Awards Manager at the BHF, said, “Less than 10% of the 30,000 people that suffer a cardiac arrest outside of hospital live long enough to leave hospital alive. But many of these lives could be saved if more defibrillators were available in public places. Since 1996 the BHF has placed more than 9,500 defibrillators around the UK, many of which have been used in an emergency. We are therefore delighted to be continuing our relationship with ZOLL as we work to make more AEDs readily available in UK communities.”

“Over the last three years, we have seen consistent growth in the AED market in the United Kingdom with communities and businesses beginning to realize the importance of these life-saving devices. This market will continue to grow and we are looking forward to the next three years working in partnership with the British Heart Foundation in helping to save lives from sudden cardiac arrest,” said Jonathan A. Rennert, President of ZOLL.

About the AED Plus

The ZOLL AED Plus is the first and only Full-Rescue AED that provides Real CPR Help® for the depth and rate of chest compressions during CPR. This feedback technology helps rescuers provide high-quality manual CPR with real-time audio and visual feedback to help them achieve the proper depth and rate of CPR chest compressions. The AED Plus guides rescuers through the complete Chain of Survival, helping all sudden cardiac arrest victims, not just those who need a shock.

About Sudden Cardiac Arrest

SCA is an abrupt disruption of the heart’s function, which causes a lack of blood flow to vital organs. SCA claims more than 1 million lives globally each year. It is the leading cause of unexpected death in the world and often strikes without warning. Survival varies widely among communities, yet overall averages around 8% in the United Kingdom.
