NORTHERN TRUST FIRST IN NORTHERN IRELAND TO DEPLOY AUTOPULSE FOR IMPROVED CARDIAC ARREST TREATMENT

September 20, 2012—Coleraine—The Northern Trust’s Causeway Hospital is the first in Northern Ireland to deploy the ZOLL AutoPulse® Non-Invasive Cardiac Support Pump, an automated, portable chest compression device to assist in resuscitation of cardiac arrest patients.

Last year approximately 70 patients in Causeway Hospital suffered a cardiac arrest requiring resuscitation. Although traditionally CPR compressions are performed manually and are invaluable in saving lives, there can be a downside. In complicated cases staff may have to give compressions for a number of hours, which is extremely tiring and may result in gaps in treatment during which blood does not circulate to the heart and brain.

The AutoPulse’s easy-to-use, load-distributing LifeBand® squeezes the entire chest, tirelessly delivering consistent, high-quality compressions.

Donna Hanna, Lead Nurse for Specialist Medicine; Dr Charles Jack, Consultant Physician; Elaine Herald, Sister in Coronary Care Ward and Adam Hanna, Resuscitation Officer at Causeway Hospital, carry out training using the AutoPulse.

“During a cardiac arrest every second counts. Using the AutoPulse is like having another member of staff on the team who never gets tired and always gives high-quality compressions while other staff members are free to provide further lifesaving care,” Adam Hanna, Resuscitation Officer at Causeway Hospital said. “The AutoPulse compresses the whole chest and as a result the force is spread across the chest, improving blood flow to the heart and brain and helping avoid complications, potentially giving the patient a better chance of surviving.”

The device is based in the Coronary Care Unit at Causeway Hospital and can reach any part of the hospital within two minutes.

“Causeway Hospital’s staff is to be commended for efforts to improve care and optimize chances of survival from sudden cardiac arrest,” said Jonathan A. Rennert, President of ZOLL. “The ability to provide consistent, uninterrupted chest compressions is a critical aspect of quality CPR.”

About the AutoPulse

The AutoPulse is an automated, portable chest compression device with an easy-to-use, load-distributing LifeBand that squeezes the entire chest, improving blood flow to the heart and brain during sudden cardiac arrest. The AutoPulse delivers high-quality, uninterrupted CPR chest compressions to maintain myocardial and cerebral perfusion even when moving patients, traveling in an ambulance or while a patient is undergoing emergent cathertization for PCI. Additionally, it offers the benefit of freeing up clinicians to focus on other life-saving interventions.

About Sudden Cardiac Arrest

SCA, an abrupt disruption of the heart’s function, which causes a lack of blood flow to vital organs, claims more than one million lives globally each year. It is the leading cause of unexpected death in the world and strikes without warning. Survival is poor at less than eight percent, but improvements in resuscitation practices could save as many as half of these victims.
