Manager, Hardware Engineering

Job Summary:

The Hardware Engineering Manager partners with the Director of Sustaining Engineering to coordinate task assignments of the engineering staff across the sustaining and development projects within R&D’s Sustaining Engineering Department. Directly manages a staff of 7-10, including electrical & mechanical engineers, technicians & support staff.

The projects include a mix of product line extensions, product and/or product accessory development but mostly products’ sustaining engineering releases. Ensures all hardware engineering projects, initiatives, and processes are in conformance with organization's established policies and objectives. The position is technical in nature and the applicant must have solid engineering experience and background.  

The Hardware Engineering Manager reviews and approves design concepts,design modifications, testing,verification strategies, and procedures. They develop and motivate the electrical and mechanical engineering resources to form multi-disciplined Electro-mechanical, Design Quality teams, in addition to involvement and coordination at system level with software development teams. They plan, mentor and ensure that the department can provide the needed skill sets and resources to support the development and sustaining of ZOLL’s products within resuscitation and acute critical care.

Essential Functions:

  • Lead the execution of product development programs in accordance with established processes and procedures.
  • Employ excellent interpersonal, communication and negotiation skills with all levels of personnel, management and external suppliers and development partners
  • Collaborate with multiple Project Managers on various Software, Mechanical, and Electrical Designs to assess resource needs and recommend assignments, and assist with detailed development of project work plans and schedules.
  • Meet with individual engineers to track assignments and progress, provide technical mentoring, assist in career development, coordinate training, track and administer time-off requests, and contribute to performance reviews.
  • Conduct budget/expenditure planning and tracking, logistics support, vendor interaction, and departmental improvements.
  • Cross-functional interdepartmental support to include; Manufacturing, Procurement, Quality, Assurance, Service, and Regulatory Affairs.
  • Review technical specifications, design documentation, and test reports that support electrical & mechanical designs.
  • Lead design review and risk management activities, prepare and/or manage the preparation of all required project documentation, including product requirements and traceability documentation generation or maintenance.
  • Manage and/or assist project managers with technical partners/ vendors supporting product development activities.
  • Effectively utilize problem solving skills and techniques to identify potential issues, assess their impact, and develop and implement mitigation and resolution plans and activities at the system level.
  • Be responsible for tactical planning and matching of resources to assignments.
  • Review manufacturing and customer issues to plan and prioritize technical responses.
  • Some travel, 15 to 25% will be required, including interacting with other corporate offices, customers, vendors, and test facilities.

Skills Requirements:

  • Knowledge of standards and regulations for Design Controls, Risk Management, and Electrical, Mechanical and Environmental Safety for Medical Devices.
  • Technical experience and expertise across the spectrum of electrical & mechanical engineering, including plastic injection molding, analog and digital design, PCB development, communication protocols, EMC and other environmental standards testing.
  • Development experience in a regulated industry setting, including the ability to interpret and apply international safety and performance standards (e.g., IEC 60601, FCC, and IPC).
  • Excellent communications skills, both written and verbal.
  • Ability to balance electrical, mechanical and software development issues at the system level. Must have the ability to implement projects outside technical area of expertise.
  • Demonstrated aptitude for successfully managing multiple projects, of varying complexity, within the specified guidelines, timeframes and budgets.
  • Demonstrated understanding of electrical, mechanical, and software engineering practices at the system level.

Required/Preferred Education and Experience:

  • BS degree in Electrical or Mechanical Engineering (Advanced degree, Electrical Engineering preferred).
  • 15+ years of experience as an engineer developing, sustaining and/or managing tasks, projects/products, within a highly regulated technical environment such as medical devices is preferred.
