Rectilinear Biphasic Waveform Technology

More current and more control

Effective defibrillation is all about delivering optimal average current for each unique patient. To control current, you must control voltage or impedance.

ZOLL’s Rectilinear Biphasic™ waveform (RBW) technology automatically measures individual patient impedance and adjusts its own internal defibrillation circuitry to maintain constant current over the course of defibrillation shock. That means more control to deliver the appropriate current for your patient.

The advantages of Rectilinear Biphasic waveform defibrillation

When compared to “high-energy” defibrillators, the ZOLL® RBW offers many advantages. The high-current capability is particularly important for the difficult-to-defibrillate, high-impedance patient. At 200 joules, the ZOLL RBW delivers more average current at mid- and high-impedances (≥ 75 Ω, which represents a majority in a typical patient population1) than any other biphasic waveform, including biphasic truncated exponential (BTE) waveform.

For defibrillation and cardioversion, the science is clear: Current, not energy, is what defibrillates. While both high- and low-energy BTE waveforms were adapted from internal defibrillation,2 the high-current RBW is the only biphasic waveform that was developed specifically for external defibrillation.2
