Job Summary:

As the Manager of Mechanical Engineering, you will collaborate with the Director of Sustaining Engineering to coordinate tasks and assignments of the engineering staff across projects within the Sustaining Engineering department. The projects include product line extensions, product/accessory development, and sustaining engineering activities. You will also ensure all engineering projects, initiatives, and processes are in conformance with ZOLL’s established policies and objectives. The position is technical in nature and the applicant must have solid mechanical and sustaining engineering experience at a product/system level.  

The Manager of Mechanical Engineering reviews and approves design concepts, design modifications, testing, verification strategies, and procedures. They mentor, develop, and motivate the mechanical engineering team and ensure that the department can provide the needed skill sets and resources to support the development and sustaining of ZOLL’s products within resuscitation and acute critical care.

This individual will directly manage a staff of 5-10 mechanical engineers, technicians, and support staff.

Essential Functions:

  • Deliver yearly skills assessment for mechanical engineers.
  • Contribute to yearly training plans and execution of such for mechanical staff.
  • Contribute to the R&D yearly Leadership Organizational Review.
  • Support and participate with the Director of Mechanical Engineering regarding tool and process standardization and evolution of development practices.
  • Participate in yearly strategic planning and budgeting processes, as required.
  • Manage expenditures and assist with budget tracking.
  • Assist in developing mechanical engineering leadership in the department and ZOLL
  • Management and mentorship of a group of up to ten direct reports.
  • Establish and manage mechanical engineering and development infrastructure to drive mechanical engineering quality and support product development programs under Program Management responsibility.
  • Responsible for determining mechanical skill needs and the hiring/firing and training of mechanical engineers
  • Assist in managing mechanical and development tool selection, implementation, training of engineers across development programs
  • Manage the quality of the mechanical deliverables across projects
  • Step out of the traditional prescriptive role of Mechanical Engineering Management when needed to resolve issues for R&D department.
  • Lead and participate in technical design reviews for new or revised products and other projects as assigned.
  • Support management activity in preparation of schedule, budget and project reporting.

Skills Requirements:

  • Evidence of progressive advancements in R&D
  • Proficiency with SolidWorks including Design, Drawing, PDM and Simulation.
  • Working knowledge of drawing creation per ASME Y 14.5 2009.
  • Ability to design, document and analyze parts encountered in packaging of embedded systems (such as molded plastic housings, sheet metal, gaskets, PCBs, LCDs, cables and labels).
  • Demonstrated experience in working in a development capacity as a matrixed, cross disciplinary partner
  • Ability to lead, facilitate, and participate in, Mechanical Design Reviews
  • Strong process focus and experience

Required/Preferred Education and Experience:

  • Bachelor of Science in Mechanical Engineering (MS preferred)
  • Requires a minimum of 10 years of mechanical engineering and product design experience
  • Experience in the medical device industry is required
  • Prior experience managing/leading Mechanical Engineering teams strongly preferred
