Position Summary: The Senior Billing Specialist has primary responsibility for assisting the manager with the billing process while providing training and support to the line staff.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Acts as the point of contact for issues of moderate complexity relative to the department processes and will identify areas of opportunity to improve those processes along with aiding in the implementation of any changes. 
  • Responsible for coordinating and assisting with training and support of new hires and continued development of existing employees within the department.
  • Ensure all medical orders are billed in a timely manner to maximize revenue opportunities, increase cash flow, and close the month. 
  • Monitor daily, weekly and monthly reports to identify trends and issues that need addressed.
  • Develop solutions to correct deficiencies identified.
  • Monitor team goal progress based on initiatives set by department manager and provide feedback and motivation to the line staff as needed, including monthly 1:1 meetings with all staff members.
  • Assist team with daily objectives, including the creation of claims and review of patient accounts to verify accuracy for billing.
  • Performs quality audits on the daily work done by the team to verify accuracy and identify training opportunities.
  • Assists with the creation of new or improved processes as needed.
  • Responsible for identifying and communicating issues or trends within the department to supervisor and manager.
  • Participates in the hiring process and provides feedback on performance of line staff to department manager.
  • Responsible for compiling and working various reports on a regular, recurring basis to ensure department processes are executed appropriately.
  • Performs other duties as directed by Management.

Supervisory Responsibilities:  Assists Billing Manager with supervising staff and provides training to new personnel in the department..

Educations and/or Experience:

  • H.S. Diploma or equivalent required.
  • Leadership skills with the ability to promote a positive workplace environment. 
  • 3-5 years experience in medical billing and experience working with all payer types including Medicare, Medicaid and third party commercial insurance companies. 
  • Superior communication and customer service skills and an ability to handle multiple tasks simultaneously under strict deadlines.
  • Proficient in MS Office Suite required.

Language Skills:  Ability to read and comprehend simple instructions, short correspondence, and memos.  Ability to write simple correspondence.  Ability to effectively present information in one-on-one and small group situations to customers, clients, and other employees of the organization.

Mathematical Skills:  Ability to add, subtract, multiply, and divide in all units of measure, using whole numbers, common fractions, and decimals.  Ability to compute rate, ratio, and percent and to draw and interpret bar graphs.

Reasoning Ability:  Ability to apply common sense understanding to carry out instructions furnished in written, oral, or diagram form.  Ability to deal with problems involving several concrete variables in standardized situations.
