Primary Purpose: 

Under the direction of the Materials Manager, is responsible for obtaining favorable pricing consistent with required quantity, quality, delivery, availability and other factors on goods and services utilized in the manufacturing of our products.  Based on knowledge and experience, identifies material sources and conducts required investigation and negotiations to insure that the correct product specification can be met by the supplier at the best possible price.  May prepare bid specifications, receive and review bids in conjunction with the Material Manager.  Acts as a point-of-contact between vendors and the Company resolving issues with deliveries, quality and other related performance issues.  Performs required analysis of material usage, trend analysis and assists in the preparation of inventory valuations.  Maintains purchasing records.

Primary Functions:

  • Identifies and qualifies sources of goods and services for use in the manufacturing of our Company’s products.

  • Conducts negotiations with vendors to obtain the best possible pricing for purchased goods and services.

  • Acts as the point-of-contact between the Company and vendors on issues of quality, timeliness of delivery, price and other related issues.

  • Based on user needs, may develop bid specifications or purchasing specification used by vendors in establishing their costs.  Reviews submissions and recommends the acceptance of the bid or quoted price.

  • Based on knowledge of historical usage, build schedules and input from schedulers, monitors usage of purchased supplies initiating timely re-ordering and delivery of supplies.

  • Performed required analysis used to determine usage trends, and projected costs.

  • Assists in the conduct of quarterly inventory valuations


  • Strong communications skills – verbal, written and presentation – ability to communicate insight and ideas effectively.

  • Negotiation skills – must be able to close deals with favorable results

  • Strong people skills – ability to develop and maintain professional relationships

  • Strong follow-up skills with the ability to multi-task

  • BS/BA in a related field or 3 - 5+ years of equivalent experience in the purchase of goods and services in a manufacturing environment
