Advisory Electrical Components Engineer

Cardiac Management Solutions

Responsible for selecting, approving and qualifying purchased components utilized in assemblies or end products. Ensures selections are both cost efficient and reliable. Troubleshoots issues with purchased components. Works closely with developers to evaluate design reviews of components.

The Cardiac Management Solutions division of ZOLL Medical Corporation develops products to protect and manage cardiac patients, including the LifeVest® wearable cardioverter defibrillator (WCD), the ZOLL cardiac monitor, and associated technologies.

Job purpose

Works under the supervision of hardware and/or software design engineers.  Analyze and test devices, components, and subassemblies used in both legacy and new products.  Lead efforts for managing components and product lifecycle under the supervision of hardware design engineers.  Aid in the development and execution of verification and validation test procedures.  Performs other duties as assigned by Management. 

Duties and responsibilities

  • Works under the supervision of hardware and/or software design engineers. 

  • Analyze and test devices, components, and subassemblies used in both legacy and new products. 

  • Lead efforts for managing components and product lifecycle under the supervision of hardware design engineers.

    • Support component obsolescence issues and tracking of component life cycles.

    • Provide needed design documentation and support regulatory submittals for component changes.

    • Support root cause failure analysis for production and field component failures.

    • Support component reliability analysis using reliability simulation modeling software.

    • Acquire and compile all needed documentation for electrical and packaging hardware.

  • Aid in the development and execution of verification and validation test procedures.

  • Provides technical advice to junior employees.

  • Works under general direction with an expectation of minimal error rates.

  • Performs other duties as assigned by Management.  

Qualifications

  • Educations and/or Experience: 

    • AS / Technical degree in Electrical Engineering / Components discipline or equivalent industry experience.

    • Typically 10-15 years of relevant experience.

    • Proven track record supporting product design testing / sourcing / life cycle from the requirements phase to production.

    • Experience delivering in the Medical Device sector or similarly regulated industry such as Nuclear Power, Aerospace, or Mining preferred.Proficient in electrical hardware troubleshooting and testing.

    • Technical experience or training in at least a subset of the following areas:

      • High precision analog

      • EMC / EMI

      • High voltage / high current defibrillation circuitry

      • Digital

      • On-board IC-based power supplies

      • Sensors

      • Printed circuit boards

      • Wireless communication

      • Handheld or wearable devices

      • Regulatory compliance standards

      • Firmware

      • Hardware / Software integration

    • Experienced in the use of general engineering lab equipment including soldering stations, oscilloscopes, waveform generators, spectrum analyzers, network analyzers, multimeters, power supplies, etc.

    • This position may be available at different career levels depending on experience, education, etc.

  • Language Skills:  Ability to read and interpret documents of advanced technical complexity.  Ability to write reports and research findings of a technical nature.  Ability to speak and present effectively one-on-one as well as in small and large groups of professionals including customers, clients and collaborators, both inside and outside the organization. 

  • Mathematical Skills:  Basic mathematical skills required, including the understanding and ability to apply basic statistical and arithmetic principles, work with tabular data, and create and interpret graphs. 

  • Reasoning Ability:  Advanced reasoning skills required.  Must have the ability to solve complex problems and weigh possible solutions to determine rank options to deliver optimal outcomes.  Ability to assess problems involving several variables in changing situations. 

  • Computer Skills:  To perform this job successfully, an individual should be proficient in Microsoft Office Suite.

This position is generally performed in a typical office environment that is usually quiet.  Employee is expected to work collaboratively with team members, as well as able to work independently with limited supervision.  Work will require significant computer work.
