Job purpose

Performs basic sleep testing procedures and associated interventions. The sleep technician works under direct supervision of the sleep technologist.


Duties and responsibilities

                  Follow ZLS protocols related to the sleep study.

                 Collect, analyze and integrate patient information to identify and meet the patient-specific needs (physical/mental limitations, current emotional/physiological status regarding the testing procedure, pertinent medical/social history).

                 Review pertinent information from the patient’s history and verify the medical order.

                 Explain the procedure and orient the patient to home sleep testing (HST.)

                 Provide age-appropriate patient education.

                 Develop skills in reviewing of scored sleep/wake stages by applying professionally accepted guidelines.

                 Review scored clinical events (such as respiratory events) utilizing American Academy of Sleep Medicine (AASM) standards.

                 Perform portable monitoring equipment preparation and data download.

                 Perform patient education and instruction appropriate for home sleep apnea testing.

                 Apply prescribed cleaning and disinfection procedures.

                 Apply monitoring of patient safety and adherence to patient safety protocols.

                 Apply adherence to AASM scoring parameters.

                 Identify artifact, inadequate signals, and equipment failures and generate an accurate report.

                 Comply with applicable laws, regulations, guidelines, and standards regarding safety and infection control issues.

                 Perform routine equipment care and maintenance and inventory evaluation.

                 Maintain current CPR or BLS certification.

                 Follow HIPAA and privacy policies.

                 Respond to sleep patients’ procedural-related inquiries by providing appropriate education utilizing sleep center specific protocols.

                 Adhere to sleep center policies and procedures.

                 Participate in the quality assurance program.

                 Comply with professional standards of conduct.



                 High school diploma or GED

                 Sleep technician certification (RST, RT-SDS)

                 Six months of direct patient contact

                 Working knowledge of Microsoft Office suite (particularly Excel/PowerPoint)

                 Strong oral and written communication skills

                 Ability to obtain Medicare required certification within 6 months of employment

Working conditions

This position is generally performed in a typical office environment that is usually quiet. This is a Pittsburgh office-based position. Employee is expected to work collaboratively with team members, as well as able to work independently with limited supervision. Work will require significant computer and telephone work.


Physical requirements

While performing the duties of this Job, the employee is regularly required to sit, talk and hear. The employee is occasionally required to stand and walk. The employee must occasionally lift and/or move up to 25 pounds.
