Job purpose

We are looking for a team member driven to improve cardiovascular healthcare. This role involves strategic thinking, understanding the delivery of healthcare, and the ability to connect patient needs with inventive solutions. As a senior scientist, you are expected to guide and execute  clinical and nonclinical research studies of moderate to high complexity involving humans and animal models.  This position also requires proven skills in  protocol design, budget estimation, study management, interpretation and reporting of study data including scientific journal publications.

Primary Functions:

50%     Design, conduct, and deliver results of clinical trials – regional, national, and international

20%     Work with new product planning to implement data collection for product development

20%     Develop and execute strategies using live animal testing for product and algorithm development.

            10%     Build relationships with healthcare providers as investigators, collaborators, adjudicators, and authors.

Duties and responsibilities

Serve as a study director (SD), project scientist (PS) and/or principal investigator (PI) in the direction and execution of assigned studies in compliance with GLP/GCP regulations as they apply.

  • Participate in and assist in coordinating all phases of the study planning process with appropriate departments.

  • Provide technical and scientific guidance to the research staff.

  • Generate high-quality project plans, protocols, amendments, quantitative analyses and reports appropriate for assigned studies.

  • Review, interpret, integrate, and present data on assigned studies.

  • Review, interpret, integrate, and critique data on other departmental studies.

  • Prepare and edit manuscripts, abstract and posters involving topics of cardiology and defibrillation coordinated with outside investigators.

  • Establish relationships with investigators and opinion leaders.

  • Travel is required, national and international, but is expected to be less than 20% of work time.

  • Performs other duties as assigned by Management.


Advanced degree (PhD or MD) in a scientific discipline is required, an engineering degree is preferred.

  • 5+ years of experience in research is required, preferably within the biomedical device industry.

  • Experience in research writing, data mining, literature searches, manuscript publication, and quantitative/qualitative analysis is mandatory.

  • In-depth knowledge of statistics and familiarity with statistical software packages is required, experience with R is preferred.

  • Knowledge of medical terminology required.

Working conditions

This is a Pittsburgh, PA based position with an in-office requirement of 5 days per week for the first 3 months.  Some partial work from home opportunities may be available after that time.

This position is generally performed in a typical office environment that is usually quiet.  Employee is expected to work collaboratively with team members, as well as able to work independently with limited supervision.  Work will require significant computer and telephone work.  Animal research is conducted at off-site facilities.
