July 2, 2010 - In a recent Miami news conference, ZOLL’s intravascular temperature management (IVTM™) technology was credited for successfully treating a 25-year-old police officer who sustained burns over 60 percent of his body. Medical staff at University of Miami/Jackson Memorial Burn Center explained how IVTM warms the patient’s blood by circulating warm water through the veins using the Thermogard XP®. The procedure warms the patient to prevent hypothermia, which is quite common during lengthy surgeries.

In the operating room, hypothermia for burn patients can be associated with increased wound infection, additional bleeding, the need for transfusions, adverse cardiac events and changes in the way a drug works. Burn patients are especially susceptible to hypothermia since traditional warming technologies, such as blankets, cannot be applied to the patient’s damaged skin.
