March 10, 2010CHELMSFORD, MASS.–ZOLL Medical Corporation (Nasdaq GS: ZOLL), a manufacturer of medical devices and related software solutions, today announced that it will display its portfolio of clinical resuscitation products—including the LifeVest® Wearable Defibrillator, the AutoPulse® Non-invasive Cardiac Support Pump, and R Series® Code-Ready® Defibrillators—in Booth #134 at the 2010 American College of Cardiology Conference March 14-16 at the Georgia World Congress Center in Atlanta.

The LifeVest Wearable Defibrillator is worn by patients at risk for sudden cardiac arrest (SCA), providing protection during their changing condition and while permanent SCA risk has not been established.  The LifeVest allows a patient’s physician time to assess his or her long-term arrhythmic risk and make appropriate plans.  The LifeVest is lightweight and easy to wear, allowing patients to return to their activities of daily living, while having the peace of mind that they are protected from SCA.  The LifeVest continuously monitors a patient’s heart and, if a life-threatening heart rhythm is detected, the device delivers a treatment shock to restore normal heart rhythm.

The LifeVest is used for a wide range of patient conditions or situations, including following a heart attack, before or after bypass surgery or stent placement, as well as for those with cardiomyopathy or congestive heart failure that places them at particular risk.

“The entire event, from detecting a life-threatening arrhythmia to automatically delivering a defibrillation shock, usually occurs in less than a minute,” said Richard A. Packer, Chairman and Chief Executive Officer of ZOLL.  “Timely defibrillation is the single most important factor in saving a SCA victim’s life. To date, the LifeVest has been prescribed for over 22,000 patients.”

The AutoPulse® Non-invasive Cardiac Support Pump provides automated CPR chest compressions when the heart is no longer effectively circulating blood due to ventricular fibrillation or cardiac standstill. It features an easy-to-use, load-distributing LifeBand® that squeezes the entire chest, improving blood flow to the heart and brain during sudden cardiac arrest (SCA). The AutoPulse may offer a significant advantage over manual CPR, moving blood more consistently than human providers. The device delivers high-quality, uninterrupted chest compressions to maintain myocardial and cerebral perfusion.  Additionally, it offers the benefit of freeing up clinicians to focus on other life-saving interventions.

Also on display will be ZOLL’s R Series Code-Ready Defibrillators, the original ALS model and the newer R Series Plus combined ALS/AED device, which now provide capnography (EtCO2) and non-invasive blood pressure (NIBP) monitoring. These additional monitoring parameters assist rescuers in monitoring critically ill patients and are useful before, during, and after a cardiac arrest.  The R Series is designed to extend “Simple, Smart, Ready” defibrillation to every hospital department with advanced, cost-effective solutions for resuscitation. The R Series ALS is the most advanced ALS defibrillator available with networking capabilities, See-Thru CPR® and Real CPR Help®. The R Series Plus, which has both AED and ALS capabilities, also has networking capabilities and both Real CPR Help and See-Thru CPR. R Series Plus is a simple AED that becomes a full-capability manual defibrillator at the touch of a button.

All R Series defibrillators use the same uniform operating system common to all ZOLL defibrillators. The cables, paddles, batteries, handles, and electrodes are also common to ensure clinicians won’t encounter a mismatch in a time of crisis.  In addition, R Series ALS and Plus models can use wireless networking to ensure code-readiness as well as collect resuscitation and CPR data for quality assurance.
