QUEBEC MINISTRY OF HEALTH AWARDS ZOLL CONTRACT TO EQUIP ALL AMBULANCES WITH E SERIES DEFIBRILLATORS

Agreement Marks First Province-Wide Contract

March 9, 2009CHELMSFORD, Mass.—ZOLL Medical Corporation (Nasdaq GS: ZOLL), a manufacturer of resuscitation devices and related software solutions, announced today that the Ministry of Health for the Province of Quebec has awarded ZOLL a contract valued in excess of $12 million to equip all ambulances in Canada’s largest geographical province with the ZOLL E Series® defibrillator.  This represents the first time that the Province of Quebec will standardize its entire system to one model of defibrillator.

About 700 E Series defibrillators, along with CPR stat•padz®, will be purchased under the terms of the contract, which marks the largest agreement to date ever received by ZOLL in Canada.  The transition to ZOLL will be made region by region, 16 regions in total, with the first order already having been placed by Urgences-Santé, the EMS provider for the city of Montreal.

By standardizing on the ZOLL E Series, the province’s medical directors will now be able to use and compare similar patient data. During the clinical evaluation, the E Series scored the highest in the areas of data review and transmission.  Real CPR Help® feedback technology and See-Thru CPR® were also cited as positive features for the delivery of high-quality CPR and reducing interruptions respectively.

The Ministry of Health and Social Services, in its desire to increase the quality of services offered in pre-hospital care for victims of sudden cardiac arrest, wanted to standardize its resuscitation technologies by offering advanced, high-performance equipment. The level of care that will be offered will be compatible with the American Heart Association (AHA) and the Heart and Stroke Foundation’s Guidelines that place significant emphasis on CPR.

“ZOLL’s core focus is improving survival rates from SCA, and we’re extremely pleased that the government of Quebec recognizes how our advanced technology features in the E Series can help make that contribution possible,” said Richard A. Packer, Chairman and Chief Executive Officer of ZOLL.

The ZOLL E Series is designed to meet the specific demands and extreme conditions that professional rescuers face every day. The E Series offers multiple data transmission options to a variety of destinations, including transmission of 12-lead ECGs to hospitals, which international guidelines now recommend for out-of-hospital use to help reduce time to perfusion in S-T segment elevation myocardial infarction (STEMI) patients.

Real CPR Help in all of ZOLL’s devices instantly provides first responders and advanced paramedics with technology to see how well they are performing the rate and depth of CPR chest compressions.  See-Thru CPR® helps them minimize interruptions in CPR that effect resuscitation success.

About Sudden Cardiac Arrest

SCA is an abrupt disruption of the heart’s function, causing a loss of blood flow to vital organs.  It claims more than 1 million lives each year worldwide, making it the leading cause of death. SCA often strikes without warning, and currently only about 5 percent of victims survive. Recent improvements in the Chain of Survival, including improved CPR and post-resuscitation hypothermia, hold the promise of improved outcomes.
