AutoPulse Plus and R Series Code-Ready AED Defibrillators Unveiled at Medica 2008

New R Series Wireless Capability, Defibrillator Dashboard and 12-Lead Transmission Option Also Being Introduced by ZOLL

November 17, 2008CHELMSFORD, Mass.—ZOLL Medical Corporation (Nasdaq GS: ZOLL), a manufacturer of resuscitation devices and related software solutions, today announced that it will debut the AutoPulse®  Plus and two new models of its R Series® Code-Ready® defibrillator for hospitals at its stand (Hall 11/E55) at MEDICA 2008. MEDICA, the world’s largest medical equipment and healthcare exhibition, will be celebrating its 40th anniversary year with more than 136,000 attendees 19 November through 22 November at the Düsseldorf Trade Fair Centre in Germany.

ZOLL, which is celebrating 25 years of resuscitation products this year, will also be introducing innovative new resuscitation technologies such as an R Series wireless capability, the Defibrillator Dashboard, and a 12-lead transmission option.

The new AutoPulse Plus* integrates the AutoPulse® Non-invasive Cardiac Support Pump and the E Series® defibrillator to provide new benefits such as fewer CPR interruptions, decreased no-flow time, and the ability to shock during the relaxation phase of a compression, which has been shown in clinical studies as the optimial point for defibrillation.  The AutoPulse is an automated, portable device with an easy-to-use, load-distributing LifeBand® that compresses the entire chest, improving blood flow to the heart and brain during sudden cardiac arrest (SCA).  The AutoPulse offers a significant advantage over manual CPR because it moves more blood, more consistently, than is possible with manual CPR.

The new R Series BLS and R Series Plus are designed to extend simple, smart and ready defibrillation to every hospital department with advanced, cost-effective solutions for resuscitation. The R Series BLS is a professional AED with the capability to easily become a manual defibrillator with the touch of a button.  The R Series Plus extends the original advanced and sophisticated ALS model with its networking capabilities and See-Thru CPR® to include the simplicity of an AED.  Both the BLS and Plus models carry the CE mark and are pending 510(k) clearance from the U.S. FDA and Medical Device License from Health Canada.

The original ALS R Series, launched in November 2006, in addition to the two new models, use the same uniform operating system common to all ZOLL manual defibrillators. The cables, paddles, batteries, handles and electrodes are also common to ensure clinicians won’t encounter a mismatch in a time of crisis.

“ZOLL’s research and development efforts continue to focus on helping to improve survival rates from sudden cardiac arrest,” said Richard A. Packer, President and Chief Executive Officer of ZOLL.  “Since hospitals have embraced the Code-Ready R Series for its ability to simplify and speed up deployment of pacing and defibrillation therapy, we’re extremely pleased to be able to add the BLS for low acuity areas and the Plus for higher-acuity med-surg units. Each R Series model is fully upgradeable.”

In addition, the R Series platform now features wireless networking to ensure code-readiness.  Based on standard 802.11b WiFi technology, the R Series automatically sends an alert when its state of readiness is compromised. Early notification maximizes patient safety by letting the clinician intervene before the defibrillator is needed for a code.

Also debuting at MEDICA is the Defibrillator Dashboard, an automated, online system for ensuring code-readiness. Since defibrillators are widely distributed throughout the hospital and their use is both infrequent and extremely critical, this unique management tool helps clinical engineers manage a pool of defibrillators throughout a facility. This support capability offers tools for maximizing defibrillator readiness and reduces the total cost of ownership, including the most costly aspect—battery management.

A new dial-up network (DUN)wireless 12-lead transmission option for the E Series® defibrillator/monitor will also be previewed at MEDICA. This transmission option is easy to use, cost effective and an integrated part of ZOLL’s end-to-end resuscitation data management and communications system. The E Series wireless option carries the CE mark, and is pending 510(k) clearance from the U.S. FDA and Medical Device License from Health Canada.

ZOLL’s unique technologies and complete line of AEDs and professional defibrillators will be on display including:

  • Real CPR Help® feedback has been incorporated into all ZOLL defibrillators and AEDs to help rescuers provide high-quality manual CPR. This feedback technology features real-time auditory and visual feedback for gauging the rate and depth of CPR chest compressions.
  • See-Thru CPR®, offered on the R Series, E Series and AED Pro®, is an industry-unique filtering technology that allows professional rescuers to view a patient’s underlying cardiac rhythm, by filtering CPR artifact during resuscitation efforts.
