Public Encouraged to Participate in ZOLL CPR Challenge August 23-24 in Haverhill
Event Highlights 2nd New England Firefighter Combat Challenge Championship
August 18, 2008—CHELMSFORD, Mass.—At a time when sudden cardiac arrest (SCA) remains the leading cause of unexpected death worldwide and the importance of immediate bystander CPR is underscored by the American Heart Association, ZOLL Medical Corporation (NasdaqGS: ZOLL), a manufacturer of resuscitation devices and related software solutions, will sponsor a CPR Challenge for children and adults alike to encourage the practice of the life-saving technique.
The event will take place Saturday, August 23 from 11:00 am – 3:00 pm for adults and children, and Sunday, August 24 from 11:00 am – 2:00 pm for adults only, as part of the 2nd Annual New England Firefighters Combat Challenge, on the grounds of the Merrimack Valley Hospital at 140 Lincoln Avenue in Haverhill.
The CPR Challenge has both young and adult participants performing two minutes of CPR on a 2005 American Heart Association (AHA) Guidelines-compliant ZOLL AED Plus® or ZOLL AED Pro® with Real CPR Help®. Real CPR Help features audio and visual prompts that guide rescuers to the proper rate and depth of chest compressions.
Participant’s chest compressions are measured and considered “In Target” when performed close to the AHA recommended rate of 100 compressions per minute (80 to 110 being the allowable range for this Challenge) and recommended depth of 1 ½ to 2 inches. Achieving the proper rate and depth recommended by AHA is necessary for maintaining blood flow to the brain and heart of a cardiac arrest victim.
Top adult performers each day will win a Garmin GPS. Child participants will receive a stuffed ZOLL St. Bernard puppy.
The event is free and open to the public. Major sponsors of the event, in addition to ZOLL, include Alpha Aesar, Trinity EMS, Merrimack Valley Hospital, and Haverhill Firefighters Local 1011.
About the Firefighters Challenge
The Firefighters Combat Challenge was created to encourage firefighter fitness while demonstrating the profession’s rigors to the public. Wearing “full bunker gear” and breathing apparatus, competitors race head-to-head as they simulate the physical demands of a real-life firefighter. They perform a linked series of five tasks including climbing a five-story tower, hoisting, chopping, dragging hoses and rescuing a life-size, 175-pound “victim.” They race against themselves, their opponents and the clock.
Over 300 firefighters from across the country, Canada and Slovenia will compete in the 2nd annual New England event, including the current World Champion, male and co-ed World Champion Relay Teams, and Second-Place World Champion in the over 40 division.
About Sudden Cardiac Arrest
SCA claims more than 1 million lives each year worldwide. It is the leading cause of unexpected death in the world and strikes without warning. Currently, only about 5 percent of victims survive; 95 percent will die from SCA. SCA is an abrupt disruption of the heart’s function, which causes a lack of blood flow to vital organs.
