U.S. Army Awards Airworthy Certification to ZOLL AED Pro A-W

Approved for Use on Military Helicopters

August 7, 2008Chelmsford, MASS.ZOLL Medical Corporation (Nasdaq GS: ZOLL), a manufacturer of resuscitation devices and related software solutions, today announced that it has been notified of Airworthiness Release (AWR) from the U.S. Army's Research, Development, and Engineering Command for the ZOLL AED Pro®A-W. The certification indicates that the AED Pro A-W is in compliance with the U.S. Department of Defense medical device certification criteria and is now certified for use aboard MEDEVAC helicopters.

The U.S. Army's Aeromedical Research Laboratory does extensive aeromedical testing that includes electromagnetic interference and compatibility, environmental and human factors testing in the laboratory as well as in-flight assessments by engineers and medical personnel under a variety of flight conditions.

This U.S. Army certification expands the portfolio of airworthy products offered by ZOLL, which now includes the M Series® CCT, the current Military PMI standard defibrillator, and the Power Infuser®, an infusion pump that provides controlled delivery of blood and fluids.  The CCT and Power Infuser are also approved for all phases of flight for U.S. Air Force aircraft.

“Having our equipment certified to support battlefield medicine is important to ZOLL and our reputation for providing products of unmatched quality,” said Richard A. Packer, Chairman and Chief Executive Officer of ZOLL.  “With its extremely rugged design and compliance with all military design criteria, the AED Pro A-W enables emergency personnel to handle even the most extreme situations with confidence, while maintaining a high standard of care during all phases of patient transport, on the frontlines, and on the home front.”

The AED Pro, with its robust design and ability to withstand the harshest of environments, is the only AED on the market that features:

  • An IP55 rating and 1.5 meter drop test to withstand pounding rain, searing heat, freezing cold, and significant drops;
  • Real CPR Help® for gauging the rate and depth of CPR chest compressions, which assists caregivers in improving the quality of CPR that they provide;
  • See-Thru CPR® to allow the professional rescuer to view a patient’s underlying cardiac rhythm, by filtering CPR artifact, during resuscitation efforts and eliminate the need to stop compressions to see if defibrillation was successful;
  • External USB memory storage and transfer technology for expanded data storage and transfer options.
