Pinellas County and SunStar EMS Systems Win Excellence in EMS Award at ZOLL Data Systems' Annual Users Conference
EMS Executives Select Organization with Best Practices for Performance Excellence
July 8 , 2008—Broomfield, Colo.—ZOLL Data Systems, Inc., a wholly owned subsidiary of ZOLL Medical Corporation, honored Pinellas County and Sunstar EMS Systems of Largo, Florida with its ”Excellence in EMS” award at the Summit 2008 Annual Users Conference.
ZOLL Data Systems sponsors this award to recognize EMS organizations that are using technology to maximize operational performance and improve patient care.
Entries were judged by a panel of executives from EMS services based on four core values that are enhanced by the use of technology:
- Patient-focused excellence
- Valuing staff
- Social responsibility and community health
- Managing for innovation
The award finalists were Healtheast Medical Transportation of St. Paul, Minnesota; Mobile Medical Response of Saginaw, Michigan; American Ambulance Service of Norwich, Connecticut; Cataldo Ambulance Service of Somerville, Massachusetts; Empress EMS of Yonkers, New York; Jersey City Medical Center EMS of Jersey City, New Jersey; Life Line Ambulance of Prescott, Arizona; Maury Regional EMS of Columbia, Tennessee; MedFlight of Ohio in Columbus, Ohio; Millville Rescue Squad of Millville, New Jersey; and Pinellas County and Sunstar EMS Systems of Largo, Florida.
Established in 1987, Pinellas County EMS and Sunstar EMS organizations responded to over 172,000 total requests for service and transported over 121,000 patients in 2007. According to the Journal of Emergency Medical Services, Pinellas County is the third largest coordinated, multi-jurisdictional EMS system in the nation.
Pinellas County and Sunstar EMS Systems has consistently turned in monthly performance measures at better than 93% reliability for emergency call responses and 99% on-time reliability for all non-emergency ambulance pick-ups. As a result of modification of protocol and training, they report a very high sudden cardiac arrest (SCA) survivability percentage. Of their SCA patients, 54% had a return of spontaneous circulation (ROSC), with 37% being discharged from the hospital.
“We are proud that Pinellas County and Sunstar EMS is being recognized by our peers for most fully demonstrating best practices in innovation and excellence in the key areas of our operation,” said Chuck Kearns, Director at Pinellas County EMS/Sunstar EMS. “The credit for this award really goes to the people at our agency who give of themselves to serve our patients every day,” added Mr. Kearns.
“We appreciate our customers’ efforts to achieve excellence and hope that our technology solutions and services play a big role in this effort,” said David Brown, President of ZOLL Data Systems. “In 2009, we’re planning the first annual ‘Excellence in Fire’ award, which will go to one of our many fire organization customers,” added Mr. Brown.
ZOLL Data Systems gives this award each year at the Summit Users Conference, which this year drew nearly 500 of the top leaders in EMS to participate.
