AutoPulse Non-Invasive Cardiac Support Pump and R Series Defibrillator Showcased at European Resuscitation Council Congress

Distinguished Panel Discusses New Treatments for PEA and Intractable VF At Lunchtime Symposium

May 21, 2008CHELMSFORD, Mass.—ZOLL Medical Corporation (Nasdaq GS: ZOLL), a manufacturer of resuscitation devices and related software solutions, today announced that it will display its range of resuscitation products—including the AutoPulse®  Non-invasive Cardiac Support Pump and R Series Code-Ready defibrillator—at the 9th Scientific Congress of the European Resuscitation Council Stand #74 in Ghent, Belgium May 22-24th.

AutoPulse Non-invasive Cardiac Support Pump

The AutoPulse Non-invasive Cardiac Support Pump is an automated, portable device with an easy-to-use, load-distributing LifeBand® that squeezes the entire chest, improving blood flow to the heart and brain during sudden cardiac arrest (SCA). The AutoPulse has been shown to improve survival to discharge in a major study published in the Journal of the American Medical Association (JAMA)*.

The AutoPulse offers a significant advantage over manual CPR because it moves more blood, more consistently, than is possible with human hands. AutoPulse delivers high-quality, uninterrupted chest compressions to maintain myocardial and cerebral perfusion, while freeing clinicians in the catheterization lab to perform procedures with optimal vascular access and minimal visual compromises.

AutoPulse is used around the globe by more than 2,500 EMS services and hospitals to provide CPR that increases blood flow equal to normal conditions.

"In addition to pre-hospital applications, we’re seeing an increase in AutoPulse being adapted for use in the cath lab during procedures,” said Richard A. Packer, President and Chief Executive Officer of ZOLL.  “This exclusive technology offers the additional benefit of safeguarding staff from X-ray exposure as well as maintaining the integrity of a sterile working environment."

R Series—Simple, Smart, Ready

The R Series Code-Ready defibrillator is simple, smart, and ready to use. It offers a OneStep™ system to simplify and speed up deployment of pacing and defibrillation therapy. It also offers smart tools to help clinicians improve CPR performance, which is important since more than half of in-hospital codes involve non-shockable rhythms and, in such cases, the only treatment is high-quality CPR with minimal interruptions.

The R Series features both ZOLL’s Real CPR Help® and new patented See-Thru CPR™ technology. See-Thru CPR helps minimize interruptions in CPR—one of the key recommendations of the American Heart Association’s (AHA) Guidelines for Advanced Cardiac Life Support—by extracting CPR artifact and showing a “filtered” ECG on the defibrillator screen. It allows rescuers to see organized cardiac rhythm without stopping compressions.

The ZOLL stand at ERC will also feature:

  • M Series® CCT, which offers ZOLL’s superior biphasic defibrillation, external pacing, complete monitoring, and a large full-color display in a single portable unit. The M Series CCT features a three-channel display for ECG and two invasive pressures with ranges covering arterial, pulmonary arterial, central venous, or intracranial, as well as two temperature channels. It also provides all the non-invasive parameter options including SpO2, EtCO2, NIBP, and fully interpretive 12-lead ECG.
  • E Series® is designed to meet the specific demands and extreme conditions that professional rescuers face every day. The E Series offers multiple data transmission options to a variety of destinations, including transmission of 12-lead ECGs to hospitals, which 2005 AHA Guidelines recommend for out-of-hospital use to help reduce time to perfusion in S-T segment elevation myocardial infarction (STEMI) patients.
  • AED Plus® and AED Pro®, both featuring Real CPR Help®, allow clinicians to instantly see and hear how well they are performing the rate and depth of CPR chest compressions.
  • Power Infuser® is a miniature pump for controlled, rapid delivery of intravenous fluids.

CPR Challenge

ZOLL invites exhibition attendees to participate in the CPR Challenge using the AED Pro and AED Plus in Stand 74. Prizes will be awarded to attendees with the highest percentage of in-target compressions (i.e., best rate and depth of chest compressions) that would be effective in helping maintain blood flow to the brain and heart of a cardiac arrest victim.

Lunchtime Symposium:  “Mostly Dead or Slighty Alive?”

ZOLL will host a lunchtime symposium from 12:30 p.m. to 1:45 p.m. Thursday, May 22th in the Hubert van Eyck Room at the International Convention Center in Ghent on “New Treatments for PEA and Intractable VF” moderated by David Zideman, M.D., Department of Anaesthetics, Hammersmith Hospital, London.  Topics that will be covered include:

  • “Arrest, Take a Rest”: Steen Barnung, M.D.,  Staff Specialist, Anaesthesiologist, Copenhagen Mobile Emergency Unit, Denmark;
  • “PEA: Is it Just an Illusion?”: Caleb Hernandez, M.D., Platte Valley Hospital, Colorado, United States;
  • “To Intervene or Not to Intervene”:That is the Question”: Levente Molnar, M.D., Interventional Cardiologist, Semmelweis University Heart Center, Budapest, Hungary;
  • “Slightly Alive vs. Mostly Alive:  The Important of What Happens after ROSC”: Kjetil Sunde, M.D., PhD., Department of Anaesthesiology and Institute for Experimental Medical Research, Ullevaal Univeristy Hospital, Oslo, Norway.
