ZOLL Announces M Series Direct Connectivity to GE's Catalyst MUSE Cardiology Information System

Tuesday, March 20, 2001 – Burlington, MA (March 20, 2001) – ZOLL Medical Corporation (Nasdaq: ZOLL), a manufacturer of non-invasive cardiac resuscitation devices which provide pacing and defibrillation, today announced an enhancement to its M Series defibrillators that will allow communication directly with the GE Medical Systems Information Technologies’ Catalyst MUSE cardiology information system. More than 85 % of the 50 leading cardiology hospitals in the United States as ranked by U.S. News and World Report (July 1997), and extensive numbers of hospitals worldwide utilize GE’s Catalyst MUSE system for their cardiology information management needs.

Richard Packer, President and CEO of ZOLL Medical Corporation noted, “The addition of the Catalyst MUSE Interface will further strengthen the M Series family of defibrillators. ZOLL Medical will provide direct communication of pre-hospital 12-lead ECG data into the GE’s family of Catalyst cardiovascular information systems. We believe this communication capability will offer an enormous advantage to our customers in providing quality healthcare to their patients.”

Wayne Reval, ZOLL Marketing Director for EMS, added “The M Series defibrillator will communicate patient ECG data collected in the field directly to the hospital’s Catalyst MUSE system, enabling physicians to quickly view and compare the pre-hospital 12-lead ECG with previous patient ECG records. By detecting clinically significant changes in the ECG, physicians can identify and provide rapid treatment of patients with Acute Myocardial Infarction, commonly known as heart attack. This direct connection from the ZOLL M Series defibrillator will facilitate the transfer of ECG data and eliminate the need for a dedicated receiving station or gateway.”

Adam Miller, GE’s Global General Manager for Cardiology Systems added, “Central to GE’s strategy in Cardiology is facilitating the movement of patient information in the pre-hospital and hospital environments to enhance the quality of patient care. ZOLL’s M Series interface to GE’s Catalyst MUSE will strengthen the connectivity offerings for our respective customers and is a further example of our commitment to work with leading-edge companies like ZOLL.”

ZOLL Medical Corporation designs, manufactures and markets an integrated line of proprietary non-invasive resuscitation devices and disposable electrodes. Used by health care professionals to provide both types of cardiac resuscitation – pacing and defibrillation – these products are essential in the emergency treatment of cardiac arrest victims both inside and outside the hospital. ZOLL also designs and markets software, which automates collection and management of both clinical and non-clinical data for emergency medical service providers.
