ZOLL Medical and AED@Home Announce Strategic Distribution Agreement

Tuesday, February 04, 2003 – BURLINGTON, MA and CHICAGO, IL, – ZOLL Medical Corporation (Nasdaq: ZOLL) and AED@Home, LLC report they have reached a multi-year, strategic distribution agreement for sales of ZOLL’s AED Plus to the home market in the United States. This automated external defibrillator (AED) is ZOLL’s first device to target the large and growing first responder, public access and “at home” defibrillator markets. As part of the strategic agreement, ZOLL has made a direct minority equity investment in AED@Home, LLC, a company dedicated to providing a total solution for American consumers to have and maintain an AED in their home.

The ZOLL AED Plus is the first to feature a combination of simple, step-by-step illustrations and audio coaching for both defibrillation and CPR that makes it possible to treat sudden cardiac arrest (SCA) at home while awaiting emergency medical assistance. Available for purchase by consumers with a doctor’s prescription and completion of required training (both of which are included in the AED@Home solution), the AED Plus also helps the user remember the appropriate steps, and administer necessary life-saving treatment as defined by the American Heart Association guidelines.

According to Richard A. Packer, President and Chief Executive Officer of ZOLL, "This is an important strategic partnership for our Company, because it means our AED Plus will now be directly marketed to the home consumer. We believe our AED is the easiest to use and most affordable choice for this market. From a business standpoint, we believe the home consumer market will evolve significantly over time and offer ZOLL great potential for growth.”

Jack M. Weinzierl, President of AED@Home said, "This agreement will allow us to bring this life-saving technology into the homes of thousands of Americans. Because 70% of all sudden cardiac arrests occur in the home, early “at home” defibrillation offers great potential for saving lives. Through ZOLL’s technology, vision and direct investment, we now have the ability to reach and save more peoples’ lives. We reviewed many potential partners, but ZOLL’s AED Plus stood out for its ease-of-use and value, which are critical considerations in the consumer marketplace.”

Weinzierl noted that his company and ZOLL are driven by the fact that early defibrillation with an AED is critical in saving lives. Statistics show that the average time for emergency help to arrive on the scene of a cardiac arrest is over six minutes. After three to four minutes a loved one’s chances for survival decreases 7 to 10% with each minute defibrillation is delayed. “It is clear that an AED, utilized by trained family members, can be an essential life-saving device in many households,” stated Weinzierl.
