FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

ZOLL and Costa Rica Chamber of Hotels Sign Agreement to Market Public Access Defibrillators

Monday, December 22, 2003 – CHELMSFORD, Mass.—ZOLL Medical Corporation (NASDAQ: ZOLL), a manufacturer of non-invasive cardiac resuscitation devices, today announced it signed a strategic agreement, through its distributor Cia Farmin, S.A., with the Costa Rica Chamber of Hotels to market and sell ZOLL’s products to its membership of 248 hotels. The first member to take advantage of this arrangement is the Four Seasons Hotels and Resorts, which purchased a ZOLL M Series™ with AED capability for the resort’s medical clinic being built at the Papagayo Peninsula in Guanacaste, on the northwest coast of Costa Rica.

Cia Farmin also is marketing and selling ZOLL’s automated external defibrillator (AED) known as the ZOLL AED Plus™ with instantaneous CPR Feedback. This product is also appropriate for hotels because it is easy to use, and it can be carried quickly to collapsed victims that require immediate life-saving efforts in isolated areas.

“High-end beach resorts that will accommodate thousands of tourists are being constructed along Costa Rica’s Pacific coast in the western part of the country. The need for AEDs, like the ZOLL AED Plus, and other medical services will become evident as these resorts are completed,” said Augustin Monge, President of the Costa Rica Chamber of Hotels. “ZOLL’s equipment will allow hotels to respond to life-and-death emergencies that will occur in these remote beachfront areas, many of which are one hour away from the nearest medical facility.”

“While the M Series is designed for trained medical professionals, the AED Plus is intended specifically for first responders, including non-medical personnel,” said Richard A. Packer, President and Chief Executive Officer of ZOLL. “It is the only AED available today that coaches rescuers through all steps of the American Heart Association’s Chain of Survival by providing vital visual and audio cues to ensure effective cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR) and defibrillation.”

Mr. Packer also noted, “Although this deal is expected to net a little under $300,000 of revenue over time, we are excited by this agreement because it provides ZOLL with an opportunity to raise awareness in a developing market. It expands our distribution and fulfills ZOLL’s commitment to making AEDs more readily accessible.”

In addition to instantaneous CPR Feedback, the ZOLL AED Plus™ also has a unique one-piece pre-connected electrode, known as the CPR-D•padz™, which applies easily to a patient’s chest. Its patented technology offers an unmatched four-year shelf life, twice that of others on the market. The CPR-D•padz includes a hand-placement locator that accurately measures CPR compressions, allowing for feedback on proper rate and depth.

The AED Plus is the only device to use cost-effective off-the-shelf lithium batteries. It is immediately recognized by its distinct lime-green color, which was chosen for its association with safety, calming effect on the rescuer, and its ability to be easily seen.
