Thursday, February 10, 2005 – CHELMSFORD, MASS.—ZOLL Medical Corporation (NASDAQ: ZOLL), a manufacturer of resuscitation devices and software solutions, announced today that it has expanded its line of automated external defibrillators (AEDs) with the introduction of the ZOLL AED Pro™. ZOLL received 510(k) marketing clearance from the U.S. Food and Drug Administration for the AED Pro earlier this week, and the company plans to begin shipments in March.

The AED Pro offers advanced capabilities for Basic Life Support (BLS) and Advanced Life Support (ALS) users. These new features include ECG monitoring with standard ECG electrodes; combined AED capability with manual defibrillation, with controlled access for ALS users; and unmatched ruggedness and durability.

Developed for extreme environments, the AED Pro has an outer housing made of a
polycarbonate-siloxane resin—the same material used in professional football
helmets—making it extremely durable. With superior plastics and a solid overmolding, the AED Pro is the only AED in the industry to pass a 1.5-meter drop test. ZOLL offers a limited-lifetime guarantee for the plastic housing, should it break. The AED Pro also has an IPX5 rating for water resistance, which is the same rating for electronics used in the boating industry. This new design allows the AED Pro to perform in harsh weather and other extreme conditions that professional rescuers encounter every day.

“The AED Pro offers more sophisticated functionality and durability than typical AEDs for first responders and lay rescuers,” said Richard A. Packer, President and Chief Executive Officer of ZOLL. “By including these features in an AED, ZOLL provides emergency personnel with more advanced treatment tools. This new product allows ZOLL to build further on the success of the AED Plus™ and the M Series™ in the EMS and hospital markets. The AED Pro fits directly between these two products because it is flexible enough to meet requirements in tiered systems that include both BLS- and ALS-trained personnel.”

In 2004, ZOLL estimates that 7,500 defibrillators with similar functionality to the AED Pro were sold worldwide. ZOLL will be positioning the AED Pro at ALS/BLS tiered-response systems in what it views as the North American Pre-hospital and International markets. In addition, any hospital can utilize the AED Pro for early defibrillation programs, contingent upon locations, training levels of responders, and specific institutional requirements.

Mr. Packer also added, “Revenue from the AED Pro will ramp up over time and will not have an immediate effect on the second quarter. However, this introduction is the beginning of a strong flow of new defibrillation products from ZOLL that are designed to advance the practice of resuscitation, and help rescuers save lives that would otherwise be lost.”

The AED Pro’s 2-button functionality and intuitive interface make it relatively easy to use for infrequent rescuers. The AED Pro also incorporates a high-resolution display that provides operating information for defibrillation. The display can also be used to monitor a patient’s ECG when using inexpensive ECG electrodes. This feature makes the AED Pro useful when users have a need to monitor non-cardiac arrest patients. The AED Pro is the only professional defibrillator that uses ZOLL’s CPR-D•padz™ electrode that accurately measures chest compressions during CPR. The AED Pro converts the compression data from the CPR-D•padz and provides visual and audible feedback, as needed.

ZOLL plans to offer the AED Pro in three models: Semi-automatic for BLS providers, priced at $3,595 (U.S.); semi-automatic with a manual override capability for BLS and ALS, priced at $3,795 (U.S.); and a manual-only model, priced at $3,595 (U.S.), which is suited for skilled users such as physicians. The AED Pro’s design will also allow for a variety of battery options, including rechargeable and disposable lithium batteries, as well as lead-acid batteries. These choices provide EMS agencies and hospitals with easy system integration and management.

In addition, data from the AED Pro can be transferred easily to ZOLL’s range of RescueNet Field Data™ software options, allowing plug-and-play compatibility across ZOLL’s defibrillation and data-collection products. RescueNet™ is an integrated data management system that centralizes information and helps EMS organizations improve quality of service, patient care, operational efficiency, and agency compliance. Only ZOLL offers a complete information management solution that is available and deployed in hundreds of EMS organizations today.
