Welcome to Code Communications,
ZOLL's online newsletter for hospital clinicians interested in
the field of resuscitation. Each month we will explore a new topic
in the field with an emphasis on practical solutions for changing
practice and improving outcomes.
Even when performed by experts, manual chest compressions provide
only about one-third of normal blood supply to the brain, and a
meager 10-20% of normal blood flow to the heart. The effectiveness
of CPR is best reflected by coronary perfusion pressure (CPP). It
has been shown that manual CPR does not provide the necessary 15
mm Hg CPP for return of spontaneous circulation. The AHA Guidelines
2005 describe the characteristics of good quality compressions,
yet few care providers can provide these during a code. The AutoPulse®
is an automatic resuscitator that can move more blood, more consistently
than is possible with human hands. Read
on to learn about this novel device that is being used for out-of-hospital
arrests and beginning to make its entrance into hospital codes...Click
